Lancaster Youth Poet Laureate

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Lancaster City Youth Poet Laureate is a program of The Mix at Arbor Place and Urban Word with support from various local community and government organizations. The Lancaster City Youth Poet Laureate program aims to identify young writers and leaders who are committed to civic & community engagement, poetry & performance, human relations, diversity, and education across Lancaster City.

During the months of January, February, and March 2016, The Mix at Arbor Place accepted submissions from young poets, rappers, leaders and activists ages 13-18 from Lancaster City who are interested in representing Lancaster as the inaugural Lancaster City Youth Poet Laureate. A group of esteemed judges chose 5 Finalists, all given the distinction of Lancaster City Youth Poet Ambassador, and selected two teens honored with the title of Lancaster City Youth Poet Laureate.

Along with winning the prestigious title of Lancaster City Youth Poet Laureate, the winning poets received a publishing deal from Third Point Press. The Lancaster City Youth Poet Laureates and Lancaster City Poet Ambassadors will have numerous opportunities and platforms to share their powerful voices, their leadership, and love of Lancaster at events all through the city. Thanks to support from Consolidated School of Business, students were each provided with a $500 college scholarship to support future educational endeavors.
